The main reason the advertisers place these ads, is to earn extra monetary income in a time where renchment and pay cuts are rife due to the economic downturn. A conservative person by nature, I do not see myself as a follower of this practise in the near future. However, i marvel these young men and women’s’ creativity and innovativeness in earning extra cash in these hard times. Even though this practise may seem effortless, there are many factors that play a part in forming and maintaining a relationship with a potential customer.
In this practise, physical appearance plays a huge emphasis in attracting customers. Attractive men and women are generally favoured for their services. Therefore, advertisers who advertise themselves take pains to maintain a good complexion and physique.
In addition, these men and women have to be knowledgeable in a wide variety of skills and abilities. In this way they can display attitudinal similarity to their customers’ preferences. Customers who have similar preferences to their skills will most likely form a relationship with them. They should also be able to understand the opposite sex, show sensitivity and hold interactive conversations.
In exchange for their services, these young men and women receive a monetary reward. Though this relationship can be classified as counterfeit due to the superficial affection given by the advertiser for monetary reward from the customer, the goal of a relationship which is the satisfaction of social needs and personal goals is met.
This practise shows that young men and women of the communist society, China, are stepping out of their cultural and traditional roots. The Chinese society today has become more modernized and liberal. Though the practise of offering oneself for a rate can be viewed as taboo or even derogatory, it is not all sleaze. Based on the newspaper article, some refrain from illegal activites, selecting older or younger customers and genearally provide innocent services. As such, should this practise be encouraged? Can it develop into an acceptable trade in our society?
Ironically, since the conservative Chinese have started renting themselves at a rate, now we can have anything thats “made in china”.
ReplyDeleteHowever, this practise may have its advantages. For those with no dating experience they could perhaps try renting the opposite sex to gain experience of dating. With newfound confidence they would have a better chance at finding their other half.
Also, couples who have a stagnant relationship may try this practise to improve their love life and save their relationships in the process.
Therefore this practice should not be always viewed negatively. We could benefit from its counterfeit benefits too.
How innovative of the Chinese! As the above comment said, everything is literally Made In China. Funny!
ReplyDeleteMy concern is that, is there any chance that illegal activities can be masked by the name of the service? Or when an ad listing states 'a shoulder to cry on' could it mean *more*? The thing is we will never truly know but it does raise some ethical concerns. Like for example, if Person A pays Person B for company, but offers them more money on the spot for sex, then there's a high chance Person B will accept and take the money. Then they might think, hey may as well extend my services! Right?
I feel that it is up to the individual to measure his/her own ethical standards and yes i do agree that it raises ehtical concerns as this practice borders on prostitution. If so, this practise should not be encouraged.
ReplyDeleteAmir has stated that couples could use this practice to improve their relationships. However, doing so would sour the relationship further as the act would be a betrayal to the spouse. The couple could instead seek help through counselling or advise from friends and family members.
Companionship IS one of the most important facets of life. We all need it. Without it, we would be incomplete. We might turn out to be mentally inadequate without companionship. Like everything else that is necessary for us to live (except oxygen), it can be turned into an item for sale.
ReplyDeleteEscorts have been around since the medieval ages but the sale of companions is something different and new. Kudos to the Chinese for realizing the importance of companionship and having the bright idea of turning it into a business.
I suppose "rent me" advertisements can stay on if they do not produce another string of social problems. I guess "rent me" advertisements selling skills like translation skills or language skills etc, what I call the "real skills" can develop into an acceptable trade in this society, but not those that might lead to illicit dealings. However, personally i will not be prompted to rent any skills or people, because I am unable to cross my personal barrier to trust these relatively unreliable advertisements.
ReplyDeleteAlthough this "rent me" business is somewhat degrading,it is actually a good way of offering your services to others who need/want them. However, "rent me" services like sex in return for money is as good as prostiution.Don't you think so?
ReplyDeleteWell i do agree with longlong, people need companionship and these ads are good way to receive them. On the other hand, these ads may also create social problems. Teenagers who are short of cash could easily turn to these ads to earn extra bucks. I suppose rent me ads though not published publicly, are also around in many parts of the world. As long as social problems are contained, these ads may prove to be an ingenious way to earn extra bucks.
ReplyDeleteWell rent me service have the pros and cons. Those people who need listening ears such as lonely person can appreciate such services. But it can also lead to exploitation, naive people can be taken advantage in the name of friendship. Some people can sell sex through rent me service. This is like encouraging prostitution. It also give a message that everything need money.
ReplyDeleteThis week post is amazingly highlighted the new emerging problem happening in this society due to the economic downturn happening in the past couple of years! This events encourages that money can now substitute love, don't you think so?!
